Earlier this year I had the pleasure of making a golf bag for my customer in Scotland. This was a challenge for me as I’ve never made or used one before! Luckily I was loaned two bags and asked to design a new bag using the best features from both. Apparently you can’t get British made leather golf bags so I was thrilled to make this possible!

I used a Spanish goatskin leather for the main sections of the bag, with the reinforced base and straps made from tough UK veg-tanned cowhide. The brass buckles were cast in the Midlands, and a metal hoop (for the opening) very kindly fabricated by local firm Alan Dick Engineering.

I believe these golf bags are known as “pencil bags”, due to their narrow profile and lightweight construction. They’re designed not to take a full set of clubs and are a popular choice with junior and senior golfers. Mostly made without a stand, pencil bags are designed to be laid on the ground next to your ball between shots.

The bag features a main opening for your clubs, with a hood to keep rain out. Near the hoop there’s a strap to allow you to cinch in the opening so your clubs don’t rattle around too much.

Two large pockets – the bottom one large enough to take a lightweight rain coat and/or fleece, the top one for gloves, teas, pencils and score cards.

On the side you can strap on an umbrella.

There’s a handle and shoulder strap, giving you options on how to carry the bag.

If you’re looking for British, hand made with care and attention then please get in touch!

Oh, and thanks to my lovely brother-in-law, Martin, who knows a thing or two about golf, for being my photo model!
